The number of widows in Mozambique is staggering. Whether
they have lost their husbands to the 16- year civil war, AIDS/HIV or some other
reason, they are all in similar positions. Most are alone with little (if any) education
and only the skills necessary to run a household. Often they are homeless as
their late husband’s family has kicked them out and reclaimed their home. One
of the most tragic impacts of losing a husband is breaking up families when
children are sent to orphanages because their mothers cannot feed, clothe or
shelter them.
How does a woman in this situation provide for her family?
Should she sell her body? Beg on the streets? What if she can only feed some of
her children? What hope for a better life do her children have when she can’t
pay for their education? Should she send them to an orphanage?
